Inclusion
- Inclusion Criteria
- Patients with essential severe hypertension Exclusion Criteria
- History or evidence of a secondary form of hypertension
- History of hypertensive encephalopathy or cerebrovascular accident.
- Diabetic patients requiring insulin Other protocol-defined inclusion/exclusion criteria also apply
