- DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:
- Histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus or rectum
- Planning to receive neoadjuvant treatment, including radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy
- PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:
- Not pregnant or nursing
- No blood disorder
- Not deprived of freedom or protected by law
